The beginning. The kit is very simple with no cockpit details, simple PE suspensions. This was supposed to be just a practice of building 1/43 scale kit. In the end it became semi-scratch build. Of course I had no idea at this point..
Dry fitting. The humps for the front shock absorbers should be more rearward.
The tail, especially the section after engine lid needs to be enlarged.
Inside of the cockpit was removed by rotary tool. Dashboard, fuel tanks flanking the seat are roughly shaped by epoxy and automotive putty.
Both nose and tail of the body are extended. The large grills are being carved.
I made some PE parts using MicroMark's DIY PE kit. During designing these parts I learned how to use basic functions of CAD software (QCad).
I made front suspensions by soldering several brass wires. The PE is one in the kit which I didn't use. Ignore the one with yellow putty - I didn't use it either.
The rear suspensions are also made of brass wires.
Stabilizer, shock absorbers, fuel pipes(?), frame, rollbar are also made.
I'm trying to make brake drum plate. It has several fins. I turned machinable wax, then added few metal fins. This will be then duplicated in resin, and the resin will be turned to get the final piece.
The original of brake drum plate is done. I made copies.
Bosica wheel is so cool, but it's bit too narrow for this car (it's for regular Porsche 356). I took it part (you can ply it open) then I used lathe to make deeper outer rim out of alumium rod.
I found the wheelbase is too short. The kit was probably right and I messed it up by moving front wheel rearward. I extended the middle of the body to make it up. The RS60 is a die-cast model by Minichamps.
Exhaust pipes are made of rod styrene and brass tube. I couldn't find any reference for rear upright, so it's completely bogus.
While ago I decided to make copy of the body. I'm going to make three. I made PE for 5-6 models just in case. About 70% of the parts shown in the picture are usable.
The body was copied. The copies are slightly smaller than the original (about 1-2% in length)
The bodies are painted in Alclad II White Aluminum and Model Master Italian Red.
Jo Bonnier drove this car at Brussels GP in 1962. Shift sticks, fuel pumps, fuel pipes, rear suspension parts are done.
Carol-Godin de Beaufort drove this one at Dutch GP in 1962. I made the seat based on the picture of restored car at Porsche Museum. So in hindsight it's likely wrong for the cars at the period. Square pieces are fuel tanks (I think...) that go behind the
The frame and parking brake lever are made of brass wires, pipes and foils. The floor and front bulkhead is made of thin sheet styrene. It's okay but I should have used brass sheet for more rigidity.
The bodies for three cars are ready. The plain silver one is the car in Porsche Museum.
Assembling the front suspensions.
Windshield is made of clear sheet styrene. I needed to make several templates to get right one. I used G-S hypo glue to attache the windshield.
The mirrors on the windshield are made of three pieces. The dome is resin copied from the master that is a turned brass. The rim is turned aluminum and the mirror is PE nickel-silver
Done! I had been constantly working on this model from March 2006 through February 2008. It took way too long than I wanted, but I'm glad with the outcome.
